The 5 things nobody tells you about transitioning from crib to toddler bed

Moved our daughter to a toddler bed last month. Here's what I wish someone had told me:

1. The mattress matters more than the frame.

Most parents obsess over the bed frame and forget the mattress. Your toddler's spine is still developing — get a firm, breathable mattress and skip the memory foam until they're older.

2. Floor-level = fewer tears.

Toddlers roll. A lot. Low-profile beds or those with built-in guardrails save you from 3am panic pickups. If the bed is higher than 18 inches off the ground, you'll want side rails.

3. Let them pick the bedding.

Sounds small, but if your kid chooses their own sheets and pillowcase, they feel ownership over "their" bed. Transition time drops dramatically.

4. Keep the room boring at bedtime.

The newfound freedom of no crib walls means they WILL get up. Remove distractions. Block off shelves. Make the bed the most interesting thing in the room.

5. Don't rush it.

Most kids aren't ready until 18-24 months minimum. If they're climbing out of the crib, it's time. Otherwise, don't let Instagram nursery accounts pressure you into switching early.

We designed SnugSprout beds around all of these lessons — low-profile, guardrails included, beautiful enough that parents actually want them in their home. If you're in the market, check out what we've built.
