5 Things Every Solar Lead Gen Rep Gets Wrong (And How to Fix Them)

The solar industry needs millions of consultations booked every year. Installers are paying $150–$400 per qualified appointment. The opportunity is massive — but most people doing lead gen are bleeding conversions from the same 5 mistakes.

Here's what I've seen and how to fix each one:

---

1. Pitching in the Opener

The first SMS or DM should ask one question — not explain what solar is, not list benefits, not mention pricing. The goal of the opener is to get a reply. That's it.

Fix: Lead with curiosity. "Is your electric bill over $150/month?" is a better opener than "We help homeowners save money on solar panels."

---

2. Calling People Who Can't Buy

Renters waste your time. So does the homeowner whose spouse makes all financial decisions but wasn't on the call. Qualify the decision-makers before booking — not during the installer's consultation.

Fix: Ask "Are you the primary decision-maker on something like this, or would your spouse need to be part of the conversation?" during qualification. Book a time when both can attend.

---

3. Letting Leads Go Cold in the First 24 Hours

Speed is the single biggest factor in lead conversion. A lead contacted within 5 minutes converts 9x better than one contacted after 1 hour. Most reps are checking their DMs once a day.

Fix: Set up SMS/email notifications for every reply. Treat a lead reply like a phone ringing — pick up immediately.

---

4. No Follow-Up System

"They didn't respond so I moved on." That's thousands of dollars left on the table. 80% of bookings happen after the 3rd touchpoint. One message is not a follow-up system.

Fix: Build a 7-day sequence: Day 0 (opener) → Day 3 (follow-up) → Day 7 (final). Automate reminders in your CRM.

---

5. Working Too Many Territories

10 zip codes with shallow penetration beats nothing. But 2 zip codes with deep penetration beats 10. When you own a territory — people have heard your name, seen your calls, gotten referrals from neighbors — conversions go up 40%+.

Fix: Pick 2 zip codes. Own them for 60 days before expanding.
