Most people start learning Mandarin by memorizing vocabulary lists and grinding flashcards.

That's backwards.

Here's why: Mandarin has 4 tones. If you get them wrong, 妈 (mā — mother) becomes 马 (mǎ — horse). You could know 5,000 words and still be incomprehensible if your tones are off.

The fix is simple: Start with tones and pronunciation FIRST. Spend your first 2-3 weeks doing nothing but drilling the 4 tones + the neutral tone until they're second nature. Then layer vocabulary on top.

Most courses skip this because it's "boring." But it's the single highest-leverage thing you can do as a beginner. It's the difference between someone who sounds like a textbook and someone who actually gets understood at a restaurant in Shanghai.
