The 3 things every beginner volleyball player gets wrong (and how to fix them)

I've coached hundreds of beginners and the same mistakes come up every single time. Here's what they are and what to do instead.

1. They jump before they think

Most new players react by jumping immediately when the ball comes over the net. The problem: you haven't tracked the ball long enough to know where it's actually going. Fix — stay flat-footed for an extra half-second, read the trajectory, then move. You'll get under the ball far more often.

2. They hit with their arms, not their whole body

A spiked ball should feel like your entire body snapped through the contact point. When you're only swinging your arm, you lose 60%+ of your power and your angle control disappears. Fix — practice the approach footwork (left-right-left for right-handers) until it's automatic before worrying about the arm swing.

3. They don't talk

Volleyball is a 6-person communication sport. "Mine", "yours", "help", "out" — these calls prevent collisions, missed balls, and confusion. Beginners stay quiet because they're focused on the ball. Fix — force yourself to say something on every single rally, even in practice, until calling becomes instinct.

Start with these three and you'll look like a completely different player within a few weeks.
