You don't need to spend $200 to smell good — here's how to actually find your signature scent

Most people approach fragrance backwards.

They walk up to a department store counter, get handed five bottles, spend 10 minutes sniffing until their nose gives up — and leave either overwhelmed or with something they'll hate by spring.

Here's what nobody tells beginners:

Your skin is the real variable.

A perfume that smells incredible on someone else can smell completely different on you. Skin chemistry, diet, pH — it all matters. "Just buy what's popular" doesn't work. Your nose is unique.

You already have scent memory — you just haven't named it yet.

Think about a smell that stopped you cold. Old books. Petrol. A specific sunscreen. A grandparent's jacket. That's your nose telling you exactly what it responds to. Fragrance is just about developing that instinct deliberately.

The top note trap kills most fragrance decisions.

What you smell in the first 30 seconds is NOT what you'll be wearing all day. Top notes evaporate fast. The dry-down — what it smells like an hour in on your skin — is what matters. Most people never wait long enough to find out.

How I walk beginners through finding their scent:

→ Start with one fragrance family: fresh, woody, floral, or oriental

→ Map what you already like in everyday life — soaps, candles, the outdoors

→ Always test on skin, never just on a strip — and wait 45 minutes before deciding

→ Build a small wardrobe of 2-3 scents first before going deep on bottles

It's not complicated. It just takes someone walking you through it without all the snobbery.

That's what Spritz and Tell is. 🌸 A community for beginners who want to actually understand what they're wearing — and love it.
