Most beginners think their succulent died from too little water. In reality, it's almost always the opposite — overwatering.

Succulents store water in their leaves and stems, which means their roots need to breathe between waterings. When soil stays damp, roots rot silently, and by the time you see mushy, yellow leaves, the damage is already done.

The fix is a simple rule we teach in every one of our courses: soak and dry.

• Soak: When you water, water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom of the pot.

• Dry: Then wait — don't water again until the soil is 100% completely dry, all the way through.

No schedules, no guessing. Just check the soil before every watering.
