5 things I wish I knew before launching my first e-commerce store
Most people waste months on the wrong things. Here's what actually moves the needle early:
1. Pick a niche you can dominate, not just enter
General stores kill conversion. Specificity builds trust. A store selling hiking gear for women over 40 beats a general outdoor store every time ā lower CAC, higher AOV, better retention.
2. Your first 100 orders are a research project
Don't optimize ads before you know who's actually buying and why. Talk to every customer. Let data tell you who your real customer is before you scale.
3. Product pages matter more than ad spend
Most stores burn money sending traffic to a weak product page. Fix the page first ā better photos, clear value prop, real social proof ā then scale traffic.
4. Supplier relationships are a moat
Anyone can dropship the same product. Stores that win long-term have direct supplier relationships, better margins, and faster shipping. Start building this at day 1.
5. Retention is where the real money is
Getting a customer once is hard. Getting them back is where profit lives. Build email flows and post-purchase sequences before you scale traffic.
