The 5 skills that actually get you hired in Data Science (not what you'd expect)

After helping dozens of career changers land their first data science roles, I've noticed a pattern. The skills that actually get you hired aren't the ones most bootcamps focus on.

1. SQL — not Python — is your golden ticket.

Every data science interview starts with SQL. Most candidates over-invest in Python and under-invest here.

2. Storytelling with data beats model accuracy.

Hiring managers care if you can explain why it matters to a non-technical stakeholder — not whether your model got 94% vs 96%.

3. Domain knowledge is the unfair advantage.

Switching from finance, healthcare, or marketing? That's a superpower. Companies want data scientists who understand the business.

4. Git and version control.

Most bootcamp grads can't collaborate on a real codebase. Learn Git properly. Have a clean GitHub.

5. The ability to scope a problem.

Knowing what NOT to build is the #1 skill that separates senior from junior data scientists.

These are the things we focus on at Stratford Academy — making you genuinely employable, not just teaching you frameworks.

If you're thinking about switching into tech, drop a comment. What's holding you back?
