Most students jump straight into solving problems — plugging into formulas, cranking through calculations — without actually understanding what the structure is doing.
Here's the thing: structural analysis isn't about math. It's about intuition.
Before you touch a single equation, you should be able to look at a beam and predict:
Where it will deflect the most
Where the maximum moment occurs
Which support reactions are larger
If you can't do that, no amount of formula memorization will save you on the exam.
The fix? Start with free body diagrams. Not as a formality — as a habit. Draw them for everything. Then sketch the qualitative shear and moment diagrams BEFORE calculating. Build the intuition first, then let the math confirm what you already know.
