The 5 most expensive kitchen renovation mistakes (and how to avoid them)
I've helped dozens of homeowners navigate $30K-$100K+ kitchen renovations. Here are the 5 mistakes I see over and over that cost people thousands:
1. Choosing materials before finalizing your layout.
That gorgeous quartzite slab means nothing if your island is in the wrong spot. Layout first. Always.
2. Ignoring the work triangle.
Sink, stove, fridge — these three need to flow. I've seen people tear out $15K worth of cabinetry because their fridge blocked a natural pathway.
3. Underbudgeting for electrical and plumbing.
Moving a gas line or adding outlets under an island isn't cheap. Budget 15-20% of your total for behind-the-wall work you won't see.
4. Going cheap on hardware.
Handles and pulls get touched 50+ times a day. Cheap ones show wear in months. Spend the extra $300-$500 for quality brass or stainless.
5. Not ordering materials early enough.
Custom cabinets take 8-12 weeks. Natural stone slabs sell out. If you find something you love, put a deposit down immediately.
The difference between a good kitchen and a great one isn't budget — it's planning. Every dollar works harder when you know what you're doing.
