The $20 rule that fixed my closet before any of my style actually improved
Unpopular opinion: most "beginner style" advice is backwards. It tells you to buy more — a blazer, a watch, better sneakers — before you've fixed the actual problem.
Here's the rule that changed things for me: the $20 rule.
Before buying anything, ask "could I picture 3 outfits with this using stuff I already own?" If not, it doesn't matter if it's $20 or $200 — it's dead weight. I used to buy a "cool jacket" every few weeks and still felt like I had nothing to wear. The closet was full. The outfits weren't.
The fix wasn't more clothes. It was:
Picking 2-3 colors and sticking to them (this alone kills 80% of "nothing matches" problems)
Getting 3-4 basics tailored to actually fit instead of buying new ones
Building outfits as formulas (fit + color + one statement piece) instead of single-item purchases
You don't need a bigger budget to look better. You need fewer, smarter decisions.
If you're a beginner drowning in "just buy this" content, that's the real starting point — audit before you shop.
