The 3-step framework for finding a hotel points "sweet spot" (before you book anything)

Most people burn their hotel points on whatever the app suggests at checkout. That's usually a terrible rate. A "sweet spot" is a redemption where your points are worth 3-5x normal value — think a $1,200/night overwater villa for 60k points instead of $400 cash-equivalent nights.

Here's the fast version of how to find one:

1. Calculate your cents-per-point (CPP), not the sticker price.

CPP = (cash price of the room ÷ points required) × 100. Anything under 0.5 CPP is mediocre. 1.5-3+ CPP is a sweet spot. A $180/night hotel for 30k points (0.6 CPP) is fine. A $900/night resort for 60k points (1.5 CPP) is a sweet spot.

2. Check award charts before dynamic pricing eats the deal.

Programs with fixed-category award charts (vs. pure dynamic pricing) let you lock in the same point price whether the cash rate is $300 or $1,500/night. Peak season + fixed chart = your biggest wins.

3. Use transfer partners to unlock rates your card's points can't reach directly.

Transferable points (Amex MR, Chase UR, Cap One) often convert to hotel programs at better ratios than the bank's own "fixed value" redemption. A transfer that takes 3 minutes can turn a 1 CPP redemption into 3 CPP.

Do this math before every booking and you'll never redeem points at bad value again. I put together a full map of current sweet spots across Bonvoy, Hyatt, Hilton, and IHG (plus how to build your own ongoing map) here if useful.
