The 3 things every adult beginner gets wrong when learning to swim
I've coached hundreds of adults learning to swim for the first time (or relearning after decades). The same three mistakes come up almost every time.
1. Fighting the water instead of working with it.
Most beginners tense up and thrash. Your body is naturally buoyant โ the trick is learning to relax and let the water support you. The less you fight, the easier everything becomes.
2. Lifting the head to breathe.
This is the #1 technique killer. When you lift your head, your hips drop, and suddenly you're swimming uphill. Proper breathing is a rotation, not a lift. Once you fix this, everything changes.
3. Skipping the fundamentals.
Everyone wants to "just swim laps" on day one. But if you spend the first few sessions on floating, breathing, and body position, your progress in weeks 3-4 will be 10x faster than if you jumped straight into freestyle.
If any of this sounds familiar, that's exactly what we work on inside SwimLab โ step-by-step coaching for adults who want to learn properly.
