Why Egypt's underground techno scene is way bigger than people think
Most people outside Egypt assume the electronic scene here is just beach clubs and commercial house. It's not.
There's a real underground techno circuit in Cairo and Alexandria — warehouse sets, desert raves, tight-knit crews who've been building this for years without any international spotlight. No big-name DJ contracts, no festival budgets — just people who genuinely love the sound and built a scene from nothing.
A few things that make it different from the European/US underground scenes:
It's word-of-mouth only. Nothing is public. You find out about a rave through someone who knows someone.
The sound leans darker and more industrial — less influenced by the polished techno you hear at EU festivals.
The community is small on purpose. People protect it because they've seen what happens when a scene gets "discovered" and commercialized too fast.
I run Ta7Telard, an Instagram page covering this scene for ~20k people already tuned in. If you're into underground techno and curious what's happening in North Africa/MENA beyond the usual scene reports — genuinely happy to answer questions here or point you to what's worth listening to.
What's the underground scene like where you're from? Curious if the "keep it word-of-mouth" mentality is universal or an Egypt-specific thing.
