The #1 mistake intermediate tabla players make (and how to fix it)
Most intermediate tabla players hit the same wall: they can play the compositions, but everything sounds flat. No groove, no presence.
The problem isn't technique — it's weight distribution.
When you're playing kayda variations or rela at speed, beginners tend to lift their fingers completely off the puri between strokes. This kills your resonance and makes fast passages sound choppy instead of fluid.
The fix: Practice your basic Na-Tin-Tin-Na at half speed, but keep your ring finger lightly touching the syahi at all times. You'll feel the difference in sustain immediately. Then gradually bring the tempo back up.
This single adjustment transformed my playing years ago. It's the kind of thing that's hard to catch on your own — which is exactly why I built TablaAcademy. Structured progression for players who already know the basics but want to sound professional.
If that's you, check out the Tabla Mastery Program. $49/month for guided lessons, community, and real feedback on your playing.
