Spent the last few years sourcing solar panels, inverters, and batteries direct from Chinese ODM factories for private-label traders. A few things I wish more importers knew before they place their first order:
MOQ is negotiable more often than factories admit. Most published MOQs (500-1000 units) are starting anchors, not hard floors. If you're testing a new market, ask for a pilot run — factories with idle capacity will often take it, especially outside their peak season (March-June).
Cell tier matters more than wattage on the spec sheet. Two panels can list the same wattage but use different cell grades (A vs B vs mixed). B-grade cells degrade faster and kill your warranty claims down the line. Always ask for the cell efficiency rating and binning class, not just the power output.
Freight is where margins actually get won or lost. A single container (40ft) fits roughly 700-750 standard panels. If you're ordering below that, look into consolidation with other buyers — it can cut your per-unit freight cost by 30-40%.
Certifications take longer than factories quote. IEC 61215/61730 and UL certs for the US market can add 4-8 weeks if the factory hasn't already certified that exact model. Always confirm certs are done for your target country BEFORE you commit to a batch, not after.
Happy to answer questions if you're exploring private-label solar sourcing — this is literally what I do all day.
