The one skill new traders skip that costs them the most money
Every beginner trader wants to learn strategies first. Wrong order.
Before you learn a single setup, you need to be able to read what the price is actually telling you — volume spikes, wick rejections, where liquidity is sitting. This is called reading the tape, and it's the difference between trading a strategy blindly and understanding why it worked (or didn't).
Here's the fastest way to start practicing this with zero money at risk:
Pull up a 5-minute chart on any liquid stock during market hours.
Watch volume bars vs. price movement. A big move on low volume = weak, likely to reverse. A big move on high volume = real, likely to continue.
Mark the high and low of the first 15 minutes after open. Watch how price reacts when it revisits those levels later in the day. This is where a lot of the 'story' of the session gets told.
Do this for 20 sessions before you touch a single indicator.
Most people skip this because it's boring and doesn't feel like 'real trading.' But this is the foundation everything else sits on. I built Tape Reader Academy specifically for people starting from zero who want to learn it right the first time, instead of unlearning bad habits later.
Happy to answer questions on this in the comments if anyone's working through it.
