Why your social media looks amateur (and how to fix it in 30 minutes)

Most small business owners spend 2-3 hours per week making social media posts that still look inconsistent and rushed.

The problem isn't effort — it's starting from a blank canvas every single time.

Here's what I learned after designing templates for 50+ businesses:

The 3 things that make social media look professional:

  1. Consistent color palette — Pick 3 colors max. Use them everywhere. Your feed should look like one brand, not a collage.

  1. Typography hierarchy — One bold font for headlines, one clean font for body text. That's it. Stop mixing 5 different fonts per post.

  1. White space — The #1 mistake is cramming too much into a single post. Let your design breathe.

The shortcut? Start with templates. Customize once, repost variations forever.

I built Template Lab to give small business owners and creators a library of ready-to-use Canva templates — posts, stories, carousels, quotes — all designed to look cohesive and professional.

One-time purchase. No subscription. Edit everything in free Canva.

Stop overthinking your content. Start posting like a brand.

5 content layouts that make small businesses look like big brands

Most small business social media looks the same — random photos, inconsistent fonts, no visual identity.

Here are 5 post layouts that instantly make your feed look professional:

1. The Bold Statement

Solid color background + one big line of text. Use your brand font. Great for hot takes and tips.

2. The Before/After

Split the image in half. Left side = the problem. Right side = the result. Works for literally any service business.

3. The Carousel Breakdown

Slide 1: hook question. Slides 2-5: the answer in steps. Last slide: CTA. This format gets saved and shared more than any other.

4. The Testimonial Card

Screenshot a review or DM (with permission). Add your brand colors as a border. Social proof that sells for you.

5. The "Day in the Life"

Behind-the-scenes content builds trust faster than polished content. Show the process, not just the result.
