Why most athletes plateau: it's not your training, it's your recovery
Spent years working with athletes who train hard and still plateau. The pattern is almost always the same — it's not the programming, it's what happens in the 23 hours they're NOT training.
Three things I see wrecking recovery constantly:
1. Sleep debt treated as optional. Under 7 hours consistently and your nervous system never fully downregulates. Doesn't matter how good your program is if cortisol never comes down.
2. Zero structure on rest days. "Rest" becomes either total sedentary collapse or accidentally training again. Active recovery — real zone 1 movement, mobility work, breathwork — needs to be programmed just like your lifts.
3. Ignoring the tempo of training itself. Everyone chases load and volume. Almost nobody manages tempo — the eccentric/concentric timing that determines how much actual damage a session does to tissue. Slow it down on the right days and you cut recovery time dramatically without losing strength.
Built a full recovery protocol around this at Tempo if anyone wants the structured version — but even just tracking sleep + programming one real active-recovery day a week will move the needle fast.
What's everyone else doing for recovery right now?
