The #1 reason intermediate players plateau (and how to fix it)

Most players hit a wall around 3.5-4.0 NTRP. They can rally, they have decent strokes, but they keep losing to players who "shouldn't" beat them.

Here's the problem: you're playing tennis like a hitting drill.

You're aiming for the middle of the court, waiting for the other person to make an error, and then wondering why the aggressive player beats you every time.

The fix isn't hitting harder. It's understanding court geometry.

Every shot you hit should either:

  • Build pressure (push them wider, deeper, or off-balance)

  • Create an opening (short angle, change of direction)

  • Finish the point (put-away when the opening appears)

If you can't identify which of these three you're doing on every single ball, you're just rallying and hoping.

I wrote Tennis Decoded to break down exactly how to think about every shot in a match — not just what to hit, but why and when.

It's $5. You'll spend more on a can of balls.
