Welcome to TerraformOps Academy — Start Here

Welcome to TerraformOps Academy. Here's how to get maximum value from your membership:

Your Learning Path

Module 1 → Module 6, in order. The course enforces sequential progression because each module builds on the previous one.

  1. Terraform Foundations — Resource blocks, providers, dependency graph

  2. HCL Deep Dive — Variables, expressions, loops, conditionals

  3. Reusable Modules — Composable, publishable infrastructure modules

  4. State Management — Remote backends, locking, workspaces, import

  5. CI/CD Pipelines — GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, drift detection, approval gates

  6. Production Patterns — Blue/green, canary, secrets management, policy-as-code

How to Use Each Resource

  • Course Modules — Your primary learning content. Work through lessons sequentially. Each contains production-ready code.

  • Community Chat — Ask questions, share wins, troubleshoot.

  • Updates & Resources — New content drops and supplementary materials.

Ground Rules

  • Deploy to a sandbox account first. Always.

  • Share your configs when asking for help — sanitize secrets but keep the structure.

  • Complete all 6 modules to earn your certificate of completion.

Start Module 1 now. The first lesson takes 10 minutes.

Why Your Terraform Workflow Is Costing You Hours Every Week

Most teams running Terraform in production are bleeding time on problems they don't even realize they have.

The 3 Terraform Anti-Patterns I See Everywhere

1. Running terraform apply from laptops

Your state file lives on someone's MacBook. When they're on vacation, nobody can deploy. When two people apply simultaneously, state corruption.

The fix: CI/CD pipelines with remote state, locking, and approval gates. Every apply goes through a PR. Every change is reviewed.

2. Copy-pasting infrastructure code between environments

Your dev, staging, and prod directories are 90% identical with subtle differences that cause production incidents.

The fix: Composable modules with environment-specific variable files. One source of truth for your infrastructure shape.

3. No drift detection

Someone clicked around in the AWS console "just to test something." Now your Terraform state and actual infrastructure are out of sync.

The fix: Scheduled drift detection pipelines that run every morning. When state diverges from reality, you get a Slack alert.

The Compound Effect

Together these create a cycle where engineers lose trust in Terraform and make more manual changes, which creates more drift, which makes Terraform less reliable.

Breaking the cycle requires a systematic approach — proper state management, CI/CD automation, module architecture, and operational runbooks.

The 3 Terraform Anti-Patterns I See Everywhere

1. Running terraform apply from laptops

Your state file lives on someone's MacBook. When they're on vacation, nobody can deploy. When two people apply simultaneously, state corruption. When an intern runs terraform destroy — you know how that ends.

The fix: CI/CD pipelines with remote state, locking, and approval gates. Every apply goes through a PR. Every change is reviewed. Every deployment is auditable.

2. Copy-pasting infrastructure code between environments

Your dev, staging, and prod directories are 90% identical with subtle differences that cause production incidents. Someone updates dev but forgets to propagate to staging. The drift compounds.

The fix: Composable modules with environment-specific variable files. One source of truth for your infrastructure shape, parameterized for each environment.

3. No drift detection

Someone clicked around in the AWS console "just to test something." Now your Terraform state and actual infrastructure are out of sync. Your next terraform plan shows changes you didn't make. You're afraid to apply.

The fix: Scheduled drift detection pipelines that run every morning. When state diverges from reality, you get a Slack alert before it becomes an incident.

The Compound Effect

Each of these problems is annoying on its own. Together, they create a cycle where engineers lose trust in Terraform and start making more manual changes, which creates more drift, which makes Terraform less reliable.

Breaking the cycle requires a systematic approach — proper state management, CI/CD automation, module architecture, and operational runbooks.

That's exactly what we cover inside TerraformOps Academy. Six modules going from terraform init to fully automated multi-environment deployments with policy-as-code guardrails.

The 3 Terraform Anti-Patterns I See Everywhere

1. Running terraform apply from laptops

Your state file lives on someone's MacBook. When they're on vacation, nobody can deploy. When two people apply simultaneously, state corruption. When an intern runs terraform destroy — well, you know.

The fix: CI/CD pipelines with remote state, locking, and approval gates. Every apply goes through a PR. Every change is reviewed. Every deployment is auditable.

If your team is spending more time fighting Terraform than shipping infrastructure, this is the course that fixes it.
