3 things most people get wrong about collision repair estimates

Been running an autobody shop for a while now, and the same misconceptions come up over and over with customers filing insurance claims. Sharing a few things that'll save you money and headaches:

1. The insurance adjuster's first number is a starting point, not the final word. Adjusters often estimate based on aftermarket parts and standard labor rates. If your shop finds hidden damage once the panel is off (very common with collisions), a supplemental claim can be filed — don't assume the first check is all you're getting.

2. You have the legal right to choose your own shop. Insurance companies will often recommend a "preferred" shop in their network. That doesn't mean you're required to use it. Your policy pays for the repair regardless of which licensed shop does the work.

3. OEM vs. aftermarket parts matters more than people think. Aftermarket parts are cheaper and that's why insurers push for them, but fitment and corrosion protection can be noticeably worse, especially on newer vehicles. It's worth asking your shop to itemize which parts are OEM vs. aftermarket before you approve the repair.
