The one automation every solo agency owner should build first

Ran a marketing agency solo for two years before I started automating. Here's the thing nobody tells you: you don't need to automate everything at once — you need to automate the ONE task that's eating the most hours every single week.

For most solo operators, that's client reporting. Every Friday, pulling numbers from 3-4 dashboards, writing them up, formatting a doc, sending it off. That's 2-4 hours per client, every week, forever.

Here's the automation that fixed it for me:

  1. Connect your ad/analytics platforms to a workflow tool (n8n or Make)

  2. Pull the data on a schedule

  3. Feed it to an LLM with a prompt that matches YOUR reporting voice/format

  4. Auto-generate the doc and drop it in a shared folder or send via email

What used to take 3 hours now takes 3 minutes of review before it goes out. That's not a hypothetical — that's the exact system I run today.

The mistake most people make is trying to automate the whole business at once. Don't. Find the single task that repeats every week and costs you the most hours. Automate that first. Then the next one.

If you're building out automations for client work and want to go deeper, I put together a full course walking through the exact builds — happy to answer questions here either way.
