Unpopular opinion: AI tools don't matter — AI skills do

Everyone's chasing the latest AI tool. New chatbot drops? They're on it. New image generator? Signed up day one.

But here's what I've learned after 18 months of using AI daily:

The tool is maybe 20% of the equation. The skill of prompting, chaining, and integrating AI into your workflow is the other 80%.

I've seen people with free ChatGPT accounts outperform teams paying $200/mo for premium tools. The difference? They understood:

  1. How to think in systems — not one prompt, but a chain of 3-5 prompts that build on each other

  2. How to give AI context — the more relevant context you provide, the better the output

  3. How to iterate — first output is never the final output. The magic is in the refinement

  4. When NOT to use AI — knowing the limits saves more time than the tool itself

This is exactly why I built The AI Edge. Not another tools list. A skills-first approach to AI that makes you dangerous with ANY tool.

The free tier gives you weekly tips and community access. Pro members get the full prompt vault, workflow templates, and the frameworks I use daily.

I automated my entire email workflow with AI — here's exactly how

Last month I tracked my time and found I was spending 11 hours/week on email. Reading, replying, sorting, following up.

Now I spend less than 2 hours. Here's the system:

Step 1: AI Email Triage (saves ~3 hrs/week)

I use a simple AI prompt to categorize every email into: Urgent, Needs Reply, FYI, and Archive. I batch-process my inbox twice a day instead of checking constantly.

Step 2: AI Draft Replies (saves ~4 hrs/week)

For every "Needs Reply" email, AI drafts a response in my voice. I trained it with 20 of my previous emails so the tone matches perfectly. I review and hit send — 30 seconds per email instead of 5 minutes.

Step 3: Auto Follow-ups (saves ~2 hrs/week)

Set up an AI workflow that flags emails I sent with no reply after 3 days and drafts a follow-up. No more leads slipping through the cracks.

The results after 30 days:

  • Email time: 11 hrs → 1.5 hrs/week

  • Response time: 24 hrs → 4 hrs average

  • Follow-up rate: 40% → 95%

  • Zero missed opportunities

The exact prompts and step-by-step setup for this workflow are inside the Prompt Vault for Pro members. But honestly, even a basic version of Step 1 alone will save you hours.

What's your biggest time sink that you'd want to automate with AI?

The prompt framework that 10x'd my productivity (steal this)

Most people use AI like a search engine. Type a question, get an answer, move on. That's leaving 90% of the value on the table.

Here's the framework I use for every single AI interaction:

The C.R.A.F.T. Method:

🎯 Context — Tell the AI who it is and what situation it's in

📋 Role — Define the exact output format you need

🎬 Action — Be specific about what you want done

🔍 Focus — Add constraints to narrow the output

✅ Test — Ask it to verify its own work

Example (bad prompt):

"Write me a marketing email"

Example (C.R.A.F.T. prompt):

"You are a conversion copywriter for a SaaS startup (Context). Write a 3-paragraph email (Role) announcing our new analytics dashboard (Action). Focus on time-saving benefits for solo founders, use casual tone, include one CTA (Focus). After writing, score this email 1-10 on clarity, persuasion, and urgency (Test)."

The difference in output quality is night and day.

I've built an entire library of these frameworks inside our Pro membership — templates for writing, coding, research, data analysis, and more. But this one alone will change how you use AI forever.

Drop a 🔥 in the comments if you want me to share the research prompt framework next.

🛠️ New resource: The Complete AI Tools Directory

I've been testing and cataloguing AI tools for months. The result: a curated directory of 200+ AI tools organized by use case, with honest notes on what's worth paying for and what isn't.

What's inside:

  • 200+ tools sorted by category (writing, design, coding, productivity, marketing, and more)

  • Personal ratings and notes on each tool

  • Regular updates as new tools launch

It's a one-time $9 purchase. No subscription, no upsell — just the directory.

👉 Get it here:

Or if you also want monthly Automation Playbooks showing how to chain these tools into real workflows, grab the Complete Bundle for $24/mo (7-day free trial included).

5 AI workflows that save me 10+ hours a week

Most people use ChatGPT like a search engine. Copy-paste a question, get a mediocre answer, move on.

That's leaving 90% of the value on the table.

Here are 5 workflows I use daily that actually move the needle:

1. Research → Summary → Action Items

Instead of reading 20 articles, I feed them into a structured prompt that extracts key insights and generates a prioritized action list. 45 minutes of reading → 3 minutes.

2. Email drafting pipeline

I built a prompt chain that takes bullet points and turns them into polished emails matching my tone. I handle 50+ emails a day in under 20 minutes now.

3. Content repurposing

One long-form piece → Twitter thread + LinkedIn post + newsletter section + video script outline. One prompt chain, 4 outputs.

4. Meeting prep automation

Feed in the agenda + attendee profiles + last meeting notes. Get a briefing doc with talking points, potential objections, and suggested next steps.

5. Code review assistant

Not for writing code from scratch — for reviewing it. Catches bugs, suggests optimizations, and explains complex logic in plain English.

The difference between using AI casually and using it systematically is probably 10-15 hours a week. That's an entire extra workday.

I share the exact prompts and templates for workflows like these inside The AI Edge. Free tier gets you the community + weekly tips. Pro gets you the full vault.
