Break Into AI — The Complete Playbook

The AI industry is hiring. The problem isn't opportunity — it's that most people have no idea how to actually get in. The window to get in early — before it becomes as competitive as software engineering was five years ago — is right now.

“YOU ARE AN AI ENGINEER”

I never set out to become an engineer—let alone an AI engineer.

There’s a story behind that.

A few years ago, during my PhD, I had to teach myself how to build databases and set up environments. It wasn’t part of some grand plan; it was survival. That was my first real step into the world of computer science. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. Just another skill I needed to get through the work.

That was three years ago.

Then, not long ago in 2026, an entrepreneur reached out to me and said, “Hey, I’ve heard you’re good with databases. Want to join our team to build AI chatbots for scientific work?

My response? “Sure… why not?”

A few months later, I found myself carrying a title I never imagined: AI Engineer.

And honestly? It was intimidating.

But here’s the thing I’ve learned since then: titles come before confidence. You don’t wait until you feel ready; you grow into it. I was scared, yes. But I kept learning, kept experimenting, kept figuring things out one piece at a time.

And that’s really the whole story.

Not a straight path. Not a planned identity.

Just curiosity, a few unexpected opportunities… and the decision to keep going.
