5 design mistakes killing your small business credibility
Most small businesses lose customers before they even read a word — because the design is off.
Here are the 5 biggest ones I see:
1. Too many fonts. Pick 2. A heading font and a body font. That's it. Mixing 4+ fonts makes everything look amateur.
2. No visual hierarchy. If everything is bold, nothing is bold. Guide the eye with size, weight, and spacing.
3. Low-contrast text. Gray text on a white background might look "minimal" but nobody can read it. Accessibility = credibility.
4. Inconsistent colors. Pick 3 brand colors and stick to them everywhere — website, socials, invoices, presentations.
5. Stock photo overload. One generic handshake photo and your site looks like every other template site from 2015. Use real photos or high-quality illustrations instead.
The fix? Have a system. A set of templates with your brand baked in so every touchpoint looks intentional.
That's exactly what we built inside The Asset Vault — a growing library of professionally designed templates for business owners who don't have time to learn Figma.
