The 3 things that actually get you your first PT client (nobody tells you this part)
Passed my NASM exam thinking the hard part was over. It wasn't. Here's what actually moved the needle for getting clients, after talking to a dozen other newly certified trainers who went through the same wall:
1. Your cert doesn't sell you — your first 3 clients do.
Gyms don't hand you a client list. You have to generate your own leads before you get floor hours. Free sessions for friends/family in week one, and ask every one of them for a referral, not a review.
2. Specialize before you're ready to.
"General fitness trainer" is invisible. "Postpartum strength coach" or "trainer for guys over 40 who used to lift" gets DMs. Pick a lane even if your first client doesn't fit it perfectly.
3. Track outcomes, not just workouts.
Clients don't renew because a session was hard — they renew because a number moved (weight, a lift, a mile time). Log it every session and show them the trendline monthly.
Starting a free community for people going through cert prep and the first-90-days grind after — courses, exam prep, and people who'll actually answer your questions. Link in bio if that's useful to you.
