Most fashion students jump straight to sketching without ever writing a collection brief. That's a mistake.

A collection brief is the single document that defines everything: your customer, your season, your story, your constraints. Without it, your collection is just a bunch of bags with no connective tissue.

Here's what a professional brief covers:

1. Customer Profile

Not just demographics — psychographics. How does she carry her bag? What does she put in it? Is she reaching for her phone constantly or does she prefer zip-top security?

2. Season & Occasion

Resort? Fall/Winter? Capsule? The season dictates silhouette scale, hardware weight, and strap length options.

3. Style Direction (in 3 words)

Force yourself to define the collection in exactly three words. "Soft utilitarian minimalism." "Structured Parisian casual." This discipline eliminates scope creep in your design process.

4. Carry Story

How many ways will the bag be carried? A collection with a single carry option is a product, not a line.

5. Key Constraints

Price architecture, material families, hardware finish. Set these upfront or you'll redesign everything at the costing stage.
