I've taught hundreds of people to bead, and the same mistakes come up every time. Here's how to skip the frustration:

1. Buying random beads with no plan

You see a pretty bead, you buy it. Repeat 47 times. Now you have a pile of beads that don't go together. Start with a color palette of 3-4 complementary colors and build from there.

2. Using the wrong wire gauge

Too thin and it snaps. Too thick and it won't thread through your beads. For most beginner projects, 0.019" beading wire is your sweet spot.

3. Skipping the crimp

Crimps are what keep your jewelry from falling apart. Learn the crimp-and-fold technique before anything else — it takes 30 seconds and saves hours of heartbreak.

4. Making everything too tight

Beads need a tiny bit of slack to drape naturally. If your bracelet looks stiff, you're pulling too tight.

5. Not having the right tools

You don't need much — just round-nose pliers, chain-nose pliers, and flush cutters. Everything else is optional until you're intermediate.
