The hook formula that's carrying every viral clip right now

Been deep in clipping data for the past few months and there's one pattern separating clips that hit 500K+ views from clips that die at 200 views: the first 1.5 seconds.

Here's the formula almost every viral clip account is running whether they know it or not:

1. Cut the intro. All of it.

No "hey guys welcome back." No slow zoom-in. The source clip needs to start mid-sentence, mid-action, or on the most visually jarring frame available. If you can't find a natural break with that intensity in the first second, that's not your clip.

2. Caption the confusion, not the punchline.

Bad hook text: "You won't believe what happened next"

Good hook text: a half-sentence that creates a specific, answerable question — "The reason he stopped mid-interview..." People scroll past vague curiosity bait now. They stop for specific curiosity bait.

3. Match audio energy to the cut, not the source.

If you're clipping a calm podcast moment, don't just rip the raw audio. Either pick a segment where the speaker's tone actually shifts (anger, laughter, disbelief) or layer a subtle audio sting on the cut point. Platforms' algorithms weight audio retention heavily in the first 3 seconds — a flat audio start kills completion rate before the algorithm even considers pushing it.

4. One idea per clip. Always.

The clips that get reposted and go cross-platform are almost always single-idea. If you're tempted to include "context" before the good part, you're diluting the hook. Save the context for a follow-up clip or a caption.

None of this requires expensive equipment or editing skill — it's entirely about clip selection and the first second and a half. Most people lose views in the selection phase, not the edit phase.

If you're getting into clipping and want the full breakdown (finding source content, editing workflow, getting paid, scaling to a team), that's what we built The Clipping Playbook around.
