Why most startups waste money on branding (and how to avoid it)

Most startups make the same branding mistakes:

  1. They DIY their logo on Canva. It looks fine to you — but to customers, it screams "I'm not serious yet." First impressions are trust signals. A polished brand makes people believe you'll deliver.

  1. They hire a logo designer, then a separate web designer, then piece together social assets. The result? Nothing matches. Your Instagram looks different from your website looks different from your pitch deck. Inconsistency = confusion.

  1. They spend $5K+ at an agency when they're pre-revenue. You don't need a 40-page brand book and a 6-week discovery process. You need a clean identity that works everywhere — fast.

The move: Get one cohesive branding package — logo, web, social — from someone who understands startups. Ship it in 10 days. Start selling with confidence.

That's exactly what I built The Design Circle for. Full branding packages for founders who need to look legit without burning runway.

5 portfolio mistakes that are costing you freelance clients

Most freelance designers have the skills but their portfolio is actively losing them work. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I see:

1. Too many projects, not enough context

Clients don't care that you made 47 logos. They care about the one logo that solved a real business problem. Show 5-8 strong case studies max.

2. No before/after or process shots

Design is problem-solving. If you only show the final result, clients can't tell if you just got lucky or if you actually think strategically. Show your process.

3. Generic project descriptions

"Logo design for a tech startup" tells the client nothing. Instead: "Rebranded a B2B SaaS company to increase demo signups by 40%. Here's how."

4. No clear specialization

"I do logos, websites, apps, print, packaging, and social media" = "I'm average at everything." Pick 2-3 things and go deep.

5. No call to action

Your portfolio should end with a clear next step. "Like what you see? Here's how to work with me." Make it stupid easy to hire you.

Fix these five things and watch your inquiry rate change dramatically.
