The 5 mistakes every beginner DJ makes (and how to skip them)

I've taught dozens of people to DJ, and the same mistakes come up every single time. Here's what to avoid if you're just starting out:

1. Obsessing over gear before learning fundamentals. You don't need a $2,000 controller. A basic 2-channel controller and a pair of headphones is all you need to start. Master beatmatching and phrasing first — the gear doesn't matter until your ears are trained.

2. Not learning song structure. Most dance music follows a predictable pattern — intros, breakdowns, drops. If you don't understand phrasing, your transitions will always sound off, no matter how good your beatmatching is.

3. Mixing in key but ignoring energy flow. Key matching is great, but if you jump from a chill deep house track to a peak-time banger with no buildup, the dancefloor empties. Think in terms of energy arcs, not just musical key.

4. Never recording practice sets. You can't improve what you can't review. Record every practice session. Listen back the next day with fresh ears. You'll catch timing issues and awkward transitions you missed in the moment.

5. Waiting too long to play for people. You don't need to be "ready." Play for friends, stream online, volunteer for a house party. Real-world pressure teaches you more in one set than a month of bedroom practice.

If you're serious about learning, I built The DJ Academy to take you from zero to your first gig — step by step. No fluff, just the skills that actually matter.
