5 Swaps That Cut My Household Waste by 60%

I used to think going green meant overhauling my entire life. Turns out, five changes did most of the heavy lifting:

1. Reusable produce bags → I grabbed a $12 set of mesh bags. Haven't touched a plastic produce bag in 8 months.

2. Bar soap + shampoo bars → Eliminated 15+ plastic bottles per year from my bathroom alone. Most bars last 2-3x longer than liquid anyway.

3. Beeswax wraps instead of cling film → Took a week to get used to. Now I can't imagine going back. They last about a year each.

4. A compost bin (even a tiny one) → I live in a small apartment. A countertop bin handles food scraps, and my city has free compost pickup. This alone cut my trash output in half.

5. Buying in bulk with reusable containers → Rice, oats, pasta, cleaning supplies. Bring your own jars. Most stores are more flexible about this than you'd think.

None of these required discipline or lifestyle changes — just replacing one thing with another. The eco-friendly version was often cheaper too.

I write about stuff like this every week at The Eco Edit — practical sustainability tips for people who don't have time to overthink it.
