5 fitness mistakes almost everyone over 30 is making (and what to do instead)

You're not 22 anymore. Your body is literally telling you that every morning — and most people just push through it.

Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I see adults 30-50 make with their health:

1. Skipping the warm-up because "I don't have time"

You have time to be injured for 6 weeks? A 5-minute warm-up prevents months of setbacks. Your joints need to be asked nicely before they perform.

2. Only doing cardio OR only lifting

Runners who never touch a weight lose muscle every year after 30. Lifters who never do mobility work end up stiff and broken. You need both — plus flexibility work. Non-negotiable.

3. Eating like you're still in college

Your metabolism has changed. That protein bar and coffee for breakfast isn't cutting it. You need real meals — whole foods, enough protein (most people get half of what they need), and actual vegetables. Not a juice cleanse. Real food, consistently.

4. Training through pain and calling it "toughness"

That shoulder twinge isn't a badge of honor. It's a warning. Smart training means knowing the difference between discomfort and damage. Ignoring pain at 35 means surgery at 45.

5. No recovery strategy whatsoever

Sleep, stretching, walking, hydration — these aren't optional add-ons. They're the foundation. You can't out-train a body that never recovers.

The fix isn't complicated. It's about doing the right things consistently — functional movement, proper nutrition, and actually listening to your body.

That's exactly what I break down every week inside The Fit Letter. Real strategies for people who want to stay active and pain-free for decades, not just look good for a beach trip.

The 5-minute morning routine that fixed my back pain at 38

I spent years ignoring my body. Sat at a desk 10 hours a day, hit the gym 3x a week but only did bench and curls. By 38, I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes without my lower back locking up.

Here's what changed everything — a 5-minute morning sequence I now do every single day:

1. Cat-Cow (60 seconds) — Wakes up your spine. Slow and controlled, match it to your breathing.

2. 90/90 Hip Switch (60 seconds) — Sit on the floor, knees at 90 degrees, rotate side to side. This one move unlocked my hips.

3. Dead Hang (30 seconds) — Grab a pull-up bar and just hang. Decompresses the spine and opens your shoulders.

4. World's Greatest Stretch (90 seconds) — Lunge, rotate, reach. Both sides. Hits everything.

5. Deep Squat Hold (30 seconds) — Feet flat, chest up, sit deep. If you can't do this, it's a sign you need it most.

That's it. Five minutes. I've done this every morning for 2 years and I haven't had back pain since.

Functional health isn't about six-packs. It's about being able to play with your kids, carry groceries, and get off the floor without thinking about it at 50, 60, 70.

That's what The Fit Letter is about. Weekly breakdowns like this, every week.
