The #1 nutrition mistake killing your second-half performance

Most footballers eat the same thing before every match. And most of them hit a wall around the 60th minute.

Here's why: your pre-match meal is optimized for kickoff, not for the 90th. If you're loading simple carbs 3 hours before, your glycogen stores peak too early and crash by halftime.

What actually works:

  • The night before: Complex carbs + lean protein. Think brown rice, sweet potato, grilled fish. You're front-loading glycogen synthesis.

  • 3 hours pre-match: Moderate carbs, low fat, low fiber. Oats with banana, or rice with chicken. Nothing heavy.

  • 90 minutes pre-match: Small top-up. A banana or energy gel. Just enough to keep blood sugar stable.

  • Halftime: This is where 90% of players mess up. You need 30-40g of fast-acting carbs in 15 minutes. Energy gels, isotonic drinks, or even gummy bears. Not an orange slice.

The difference between fading at 65' and dominating at 85' is almost always nutritional, not fitness.
