Q: Should I do cardio if my goal is to build muscle?

A: Yes, but be strategic about it.

Cardio does not kill your gains when done properly. It actually helps by:

  • Improving cardiovascular health and recovery between sets

  • Keeping body fat in check during a bulk

  • Boosting appetite regulation and mental health

Recommended approach:

  • 2-3 sessions per week of low-intensity cardio (walking, cycling) for 20-30 minutes

  • Keep intense cardio (HIIT, sprints) to 1-2x per week max

  • Do cardio after lifting, or on separate days

  • If you're struggling to gain weight, reduce cardio volume

The worst thing you can do is zero cardio. Your heart is a muscle too — train it.

Q: How much protein do I actually need per day?

A: The research consistently shows 0.7-1g of protein per pound of body weight is the sweet spot for muscle growth.

So if you weigh 170 lbs, aim for 120-170g of protein daily.

Some practical tips:

  • Spread protein across 3-5 meals (30-50g per meal)

  • Prioritize whole food sources: chicken breast, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, lean beef

  • Don't stress about hitting the exact number every day — consistency over perfection

  • If you're in a caloric deficit (cutting), go toward the higher end to preserve muscle

Q: How important is sleep for muscle growth?

A: Sleep is arguably more important than your training program.

Here's why:

  • Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep

  • Muscle protein synthesis peaks during rest, not during training

  • Poor sleep increases cortisol (stress hormone that breaks down muscle)

  • Sleep deprivation kills your motivation and performance in the gym

Aim for 7-9 hours per night. Tips to improve sleep quality:

  • Keep your room cool and dark

  • No screens 30-60 minutes before bed

  • Consistent sleep/wake times (even weekends)

  • Avoid caffeine after 2 PM

Q: Do I need supplements to build muscle?

A: No. Supplements are exactly that — supplemental. They're not required.

The only ones worth considering:

  1. Creatine Monohydrate (5g/day) – Most researched supplement in history. Safe, cheap, effective.

  2. Protein Powder – Convenient if you struggle to hit your protein target through whole food.

  3. Vitamin D – If you don't get much sunlight.

Everything else is marketing. Focus on whole foods first: chicken, eggs, rice, oats, fruits, vegetables. Nail your nutrition fundamentals before spending money on supplements.

Q: How many days per week should I train as a beginner?

A: Start with 3-4 days per week with at least one rest day between sessions. This gives your muscles enough time to recover and grow.

A solid beginner split:

  • Day 1 – Upper Body (Push focus)

  • Day 2 – Lower Body

  • Day 3 – Rest

  • Day 4 – Upper Body (Pull focus)

  • Day 5 – Lower Body

  • Day 6-7 – Rest / Active Recovery

As you progress and your recovery improves, you can move to 5-6 days. The key is consistency over intensity — showing up 3 times a week every week beats going 6 times and burning out after a month.
