The 3 biggest mistakes beginners make in the gym (and what to do instead)
I've been coaching beginners for years and I see the same three mistakes destroy progress over and over.
Mistake #1: Program hopping.
You don't need a new program every 2 weeks. You need to stick to one well-designed program for 12+ weeks and actually track your progressive overload. The magic is in consistency, not variety.
Mistake #2: Eating like a bird and wondering why nothing grows.
If you weigh 150lbs and eat 1,800 calories, you're not building anything. You need a modest surplus (300-500 cals above maintenance) with at least 0.8g protein per pound of bodyweight. It's not complicated — it just requires actually doing it.
Mistake #3: Skipping the basics for Instagram exercises.
Bench, squat, deadlift, overhead press, rows, and pull-ups built more muscle than every cable fly variation combined. Master the fundamentals before you get fancy.
If you're a beginner who wants a structured program, proper nutrition guidance, and a community of people going through the same journey — that's exactly what I built The Gains Lab for.
