5 things I wish someone told me before my first dance class

After 20 years of teaching adults who are brand new to dance, I keep hearing the same fears on day one.

So here's what I tell every single student before we start:

1. You don't need rhythm to start — you build it.

Rhythm isn't a gift. It's a pattern your body learns through repetition. Every great dancer started without it.

2. Your body already knows how to move beautifully.

You walk, you stretch, you breathe. Dance is just those things with intention. You're closer than you think.

3. Mirrors are tools, not judges.

Don't compare your day 1 to someone's year 5. Use the mirror to notice, not criticize.

4. Soreness is normal. Embarrassment fades fast.

Your muscles will talk to you after class. That's growth. And that awkward feeling? Gone by week two.

5. The best dancers aren't the most flexible — they're the most consistent.

15 minutes of practice daily beats a 3-hour session once a month. Every time.

If you've been thinking about starting dance but keep putting it off — this is your sign. The only wrong move is not starting.
