I'm going to say something that'll trigger half of Reddit: a computer science degree is one of the least efficient ways to become a working developer in 2026.
Before the pitchforks come out β CS degrees are great for some people. If you want to work on compilers, operating systems, or do research, go get one. No argument.
But if your goal is to build software and get paid for it? There's a faster path.
Theory you'll rarely use in industry
Group projects where one person does all the work
A piece of paper that impresses fewer employers every year
Debt
Practical skills you use on day one of any job
A portfolio of deployed projects that prove you can build
Real problem-solving ability (because nobody handed you the answer)
Zero debt
Google, Apple, IBM, and Tesla have all dropped degree requirements. Startups never cared in the first place. What they care about:
1. Can you build things?
Show a GitHub with deployed projects and you've answered this.
2. Can you solve problems?
Walk through your debugging process in an interview and you stand out.
3. Can you learn fast?
Self-taught developers prove this by definition. You taught yourself. That's the hardest flex.

β Understanding of fundamentals (not algorithms nobody uses)

That last one is underrated. Most people who quit coding quit because they tried to do it alone.
Don't do it alone.
This path is harder in some ways. Nobody gives you a schedule. Nobody gives you a grade. Nobody tells you when you're "ready."
You have to build that structure yourself. Or find a community that builds it for you.
