5 things I wish someone told me before I moved into my first home
I moved into my first place two years ago and made every mistake in the book. Here's what I'd tell myself if I could go back:
1. You don't need to furnish everything at once.
The pressure to have a "finished" home is fake. Buy one great piece at a time. Your space will feel more intentional and way less like a catalog.
2. Learn 5 solid recipes before you learn 50 mediocre ones.
A perfect roast chicken, a reliable pasta, a good soup, a simple salad, and one impressive dessert. That covers 90% of real life — weeknights, date nights, guests.
3. Lighting changes everything.
One trip to get warm-toned bulbs and a couple of lamps will do more for your home than any piece of furniture under $500.
4. The "cleaning schedule" people post online won't work for you.
Build your own rhythm. Start with the rooms that stress you out most and work backwards.
5. Your home should work for your actual life, not your Pinterest board.
That all-white kitchen looks incredible until you're cooking with turmeric. Design for how you actually live.
If this resonates, I built The Home Edit Club for people exactly like us — newlyweds, new homeowners, and anyone turning a house into a home for the first time. Recipes, décor guides, DIY projects, and a community of people who get it.
