The real reason you can't start (it's not motivation)

If you've ever sat in front of a task you know exactly how to do — and just... didn't — you don't have a motivation problem. You have a task initiation problem, and they're not the same thing.

Motivation is a feeling. Initiation is a mental process: the specific moment your brain converts "I should do this" into "I am now doing this." That process can fail even when you care deeply about the outcome — sometimes because you care so much the task feels heavier than it should.

A few things that make initiation harder than it needs to be:

  • Vague framing. "Work on my project" gives your brain nothing to grab. "Open the document" does.

  • Task size. Your brain isn't rejecting the task, it's rejecting the size of the first step.

  • Delayed rewards. If the payoff is weeks away, there's nothing pulling you into motion today.

  • Friction. Every extra click, extra decision, or extra minute of setup is one more chance to bail.

The fix isn't "try harder." It's making the first action so small and so immediate that starting requires almost no willpower at all — then giving yourself something to feel good about the second you begin, not just when you finish.

That's the whole idea behind a method I call IGNITE (Identify, Get specific, Narrow, Initiate, Trigger a reward, Extend only if momentum shows up) — 2 minutes, one tiny action, no requirement to finish anything.

If "I know what to do, I just can't make myself start" sounds like your life, that's exactly the gap this was built for. New Year, same brain, different system.
