5 things I wish someone told me when I found out I was lactose intolerant
Getting diagnosed with lactose intolerance feels like someone just banned you from 60% of the foods you love. Pizza, ice cream, mac and cheese — suddenly they're all on the no-fly list.
But after years of trial and error (emphasis on error), here's what I know now:
1. You're not allergic to dairy — you're just bad at digesting it.
Lactose intolerance isn't an allergy. Your body just doesn't produce enough lactase enzyme. This means your tolerance level is unique to you. Some people can handle aged cheese. Others can't even look at a latte.
2. Lactase supplements actually work (sometimes).
Popping a Lactaid before a meal can buy you some runway, but it's not a magic pill. It won't save you from a full cheese board. Use it strategically — not as a daily crutch.
3. Not all dairy alternatives are created equal.
Oat milk in coffee? Chef's kiss. Almond milk in cereal? Watery sadness. Cashew-based cheese melts beautifully. Coconut yogurt has better probiotics than most dairy yogurt. You need a guide — not just a grocery store aisle.
4. Read every label. Seriously.
Lactose hides in bread, chips, salad dressing, protein bars, and even some medications. "Contains milk" is obvious. "Sodium caseinate" is not. Learn the hidden names.
5. Your gut will thank you in ways you didn't expect.
Once I dialed in my diet, the bloating stopped. The brain fog lifted. My skin cleared up. Turns out my body was fighting dairy for years and I just thought it was "normal."
If any of this hits home, I write about this stuff every week in The Lactose List — recipes, product reviews, supplement guides, and gut health deep dives.
