I've spent a lot of time helping high schoolers with algebra and geometry, and there's one pattern that shows up over and over: kids don't fail because they can't do math. They fail because they've been trained to pattern-match instead of reason.

Here's what I mean. Give a student 20 practice problems that all look the same, and they'll crush it. Change the wording slightly on the test, or combine two concepts they learned separately, and suddenly they freeze. That's not a math problem — that's a "I memorized steps instead of understanding why they work" problem.

The fix isn't more repetition. It's forcing yourself to explain the why out loud before you touch the how:

• Why does this equation need to be balanced?

• Why does a negative times a negative make a positive?

• Why does the angle sum of a triangle always equal 180°?

If you can't answer the why, you're one weird test question away from a blown grade — no matter how many practice sets you've done.
