The Beginner's Trap: Why Most New Runners Quit in 3 Weeks

I've seen it a hundred times. Someone decides to "start running." They go out way too hard on day one, their shins are on fire by day three, and by week two they've convinced themselves running "just isn't for them."

It's not a willpower problem. It's a programming problem.

Here's what actually works for beginners:

Week 1-2: Walk/run intervals. 1 minute running, 2 minutes walking, repeat for 20 minutes. If that feels too easy — good. That's the point.

Week 3-4: Shift to 2 min running, 1 min walking. Still only 20-25 minutes total. The goal is to finish every session feeling like you could do more.

Month 2: Now you can start building. Continuous 15-20 minute runs, 3x per week. Add 10% distance each week max.

The mistake everyone makes is treating running like a test you have to pass. It's not. It's a skill you build — like anything else.

The people who are still running a year from now aren't the most talented. They're the ones who started slow enough to not hate it.

I built The Mile Club because I got tired of watching beginners burn out alone. We do structured weekly plans, form check-ins, and — most importantly — we actually hold each other accountable.

If you want to become a runner (not just someone who tried running once), this is the crew.
