5 things I wish someone told me before my first padel game
I've been coaching padel for a while now, and every single beginner makes the same mistakes. Here's what would've saved me months:
1. The walls are your friend, not your enemy. Most beginners panic when the ball hits the glass. Let it bounce off — that's where padel gets interesting. Practice reading the angle instead of avoiding it.
2. You don't need power. You need placement. Padel rewards touch and positioning way more than raw strength. Aim for corners, not speed. A soft lob to the back glass wins more points than a smash into the net.
3. Your ready position matters more than your swing. Feet shoulder-width apart, racket up, weight forward. If you're not ready between shots, you're always late.
4. Learn the bandeja before the smash. Everyone wants to hit overheads like a pro. The bandeja (a controlled overhead slice) is 10x more useful and keeps you in position. Master it first.
5. Play doubles immediately. Padel is a doubles sport. You'll learn positioning, communication, and court coverage way faster playing 2v2 than hitting against a wall alone.
The fastest way to improve? Get structured coaching and a community that holds you accountable. That's exactly what I built at The Padel Lab.
