5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I First Became Muslim

When you first take shahada, everyone congratulates you. Then you go home and realize... you don't know how to pray yet.

Nobody tells you that the first few months are equal parts beautiful and overwhelming. Here are 5 things that would've saved me a lot of confusion:

1. You don't need to learn everything at once.

Start with the 5 daily prayers. That's it. Get comfortable with wudu and the basic movements. Everything else comes with time.

2. Not every opinion you hear is authentic.

Well-meaning people will give you contradicting advice. Learn to ask "what's the source?" Early on, stick to Quran and Sahih hadith. When in doubt, ask a scholar — not just anyone at the masjid.

3. Your past is wiped clean.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Islam wipes out whatever came before it." You're starting fresh. Don't carry guilt from your previous life.

4. It's okay to struggle with Arabic.

You can pray in your language while you learn. Allah understands all languages. The Arabic will come — don't let it be a barrier between you and your Creator.

5. Find a community.

Islam isn't meant to be practiced alone. Even if it's just 2-3 people you can text when you have a question, that connection makes all the difference.

I built The Path for Revert Muslims because this resource didn't exist when I needed it. Everything is sourced, structured, and built with new Muslims in mind.

If this resonates with you, the door is always open.
