The 3 mistakes that kill most indie perfume brands before they launch
I've seen dozens of people try to start perfume brands and fail — not because they lacked talent, but because they made one of these three mistakes:
1. Starting with expensive ingredients before understanding scent families.
You don't need oud or real jasmine absolute to make a great fragrance. Start with synthetic aroma chemicals. They're affordable, consistent, and used by every major house. Master the basics first.
2. Skipping the curing process.
Fresh blends smell completely different after 2-4 weeks. If you're judging your formula the day you mix it, you're making decisions with incomplete information. Patience is literally a competitive advantage.
3. Overcomplicating the formula.
The best-selling indie fragrances often have 8-15 notes, not 40. Complexity doesn't equal quality. A well-balanced 10-note blend will outsell a muddy 30-note mess every time.
