The 15-minute test before you buy another plant

Most plants die from three errors: the wrong season, wet feet or dry roots, and a hole that was too deep or too small. Everything else is detail.

Do this before the nursery trip:

Light. Stand in the bed at 9, 1, and 5 on a clear day. Full sun means 6–8 unobstructed hours. Morning sun with afternoon shade is a gift in heat and a compromise in cool climates. All-day shade under a dense tree is not a vegetable garden.

Drainage. Dig a hole one foot deep. Fill it. Standing water four hours later means you need a raised bed, not a tougher tomato. Vanishes in ten minutes in sand? You need compost and mulch, not a new seed packet.

The squeeze. Damp soil in your fist: sand falls apart, clay ribbons and shines, loam holds a ball that crumbles when poked. You can grow in all three. You cannot pretend they are the same.

Write your last spring frost and first fall frost on a scrap of paper. Those two dates run more of a backyard than any variety name on a stick.

That’s the whole method. The rest is which plant, which month, and not watering a desert rosemary like a basil.

Generic watering schedules kill collector plants

If you collect indoor plants, a "water every Sunday" chart is how you lose the expensive ones.

A calathea and a ZZ plant in the same window are not the same organism. One wants consistently moist soil and high humidity. The other wants to dry out and will rot if you treat it like a tropical.

What actually matters, in order:

  1. Light by species — not "bright indirect" as a slogan. Distance from the window, north vs south, and whether the leaf is a low-light survivor or a high-light grower.

  2. Soil that matches the root — aroids in chunky mix, succulents in mineral mix. Potting soil from a bag is why roots sit wet.

  3. Water when that plant is dry — lift the pot, check the mix, don't follow a calendar.

Collectors don't need another beginner watering meme. They need a species lookup: light, mix, water, pests, and what yellowing actually means on that plant.

That's the book.
