Your first move is not applying for another credit card.

Before paying a collection, submitting a dispute or opening a new account:

  1. Download all three reports from AnnualCreditReport.com

  2. Compare the reported names, dates, balances and account status

  3. Mark anything you genuinely believe is inaccurate or unfamiliar

  4. Keep copies of every report, letter and supporting document

Your score is only the result. Start by understanding what is actually being reported.

The Rebuild turns that process into clear, ordered lessons with checklists, educational templates, quizzes and community support.

Stop paying collections first. Here's the 30-day order that actually moves a score.

Most people coming off collections or bankruptcy do the same three things in the wrong order:

  1. Pay the collection.

  2. Apply for a new card.

  3. Then finally look at the report.

That sequence keeps the negative on the file, adds a hard inquiry, and leaves utilization a mess. The score barely moves. They quit.

The order that works is slower and more boring:

Days 1–2: Pull Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion from AnnualCreditReport.com. Map every negative item: bureau, creditor, date of first delinquency, balance. Do not call anyone yet.

Days 3–14: Dispute only the items that are wrong — wrong balance, wrong dates, a collector you never heard of. One item at a time, in writing, certified mail. Do not flood the bureau. Paying a collection usually turns it into a “paid collection.” Still negative.

Days 14–30: Open one new positive account. Secured card from a real bank. Autopay in full. Keep statement-date utilization under 10%. Statement date ≠ due date. That one distinction is worth more than most “credit hacks.”

If the debt is old, sending money can restart the clock in some states. Check before you pay.

This is the first 30 days of CleanSlate. Not magic. Just the sequence people skip because it is not flashy.
