How to tell if your rice is actually premium (most people can't)

I've been working with rice my whole life, and here's what I've learned about what separates great rice from average rice:

1. The smell test

Good jasmine rice should have a natural, slightly floral aroma even before cooking. If it smells flat or dusty, it's been sitting in a warehouse too long.

2. Grain length and consistency

Premium rice has uniform grain size. If you see a mix of broken and whole grains, that's a sign of lower-grade milling.

3. The water test

When you wash premium rice, the water clears up fast — usually by the 2nd or 3rd rinse. Cheap rice stays cloudy because of excess starch from broken grains.

4. Cooking texture

Premium rice holds its shape after cooking. Each grain is distinct, not mushy. It should be soft but with a slight bite.

5. Where it's sourced

The best rice comes from specific regions known for ideal growing conditions. Always ask your supplier about the origin — if they can't tell you, that's a red flag.

At The Rice Shop, we hand-select every batch. If you want rice that actually tastes like rice is supposed to taste, check us out.
